True story:

Today I called a customer service number. A machine picked up, and a recording told me to "Please listen carefully, as our menu options have changed." The recording then said, "If you are trying to reach [customer service number], please press 1 now."

There was no other menu option.

Almost every automated phone menu claims to have been changed recently, necessitating your rapt attention. Is there really a sufficient number of Americans who memorize these menus and zip through them without listening? I suspect there isn't, and that the three seconds they use to tell us that the menus have changed is a complete waste of our time.
